The International Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) Conference; A review of new approaches to the treatment of CFIDS

The International CFS Conference occurred this past February in Sydney, Australia. Sponsored by the University of Newcastle in collaboration with Combined CFS Consumer Groups, the conference focused on new approaches to the treatment of CFIDS. The gathering, which started with a welcome barbecue and closed with a question and answer panel including some of the top doctors and researchers in the field, offered many dynamic and different options of treatment for the sufferers of CFS.

The conference featured keynote speakers from all over the world. Attendees were treated to over fifty lectures and seventy papers, not to mention numerous posters and displays, presented throughout the two-day event. Topics varied from in-depth treatment techniques to cutting edge advances in the medical research on CFIDS.

One paper delivered at the conference, CFS: A Nutritional Perspective by Dr. Hilton Lowe, centered on the important function nutritional supplements played in the treatment of chronic fatigue.

According to Lowe, "The nutritional approach to correct physiological function is aimed at the digestive tract, liver function, inflammatory control and adrenal dysfunction. Assessment and optimization of physiological function at these integral areas show a predictable benefit using nutritional supplements combined with minimal use of synthetic pharmaceuticals."

In his paper he presents discussion of both physiology and biochemical pathways to support the use of nutritional supplements. All encompassing, Lowe's approach to the treatment of CFIDS "is holistic."

Other topics of interest presented during the conference included a lecture by Dr. Peter Rowe titled "New Clinical Insights in the Treatment of CFS," a paper, Exercise Capacity of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients from the Department of Human Physiology and Sports Medicine of the University Hospital AZ-VUB, Brussels, Belgium, and an intriguing discussion on "CFS Children and Youth: the Human Rights Perspective" by Maureen Stephenson.
