New research indicates that DHEA could be helpful for heart disease. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) may benefit people with cardiovascular disease both by reducing artery stiffness and by enhancing insulin sensitivity, say Japanese researchers.

A research team from Kumamoto University School of Medicine in Japan gave either 25mg of DHEA daily or a placebo to 24 men for 12 weeks in a randomized, double-blind trial. The researchers found that those in the DHEA group experienced not only improved vascular endothelial function, but also enhanced insulin sensitivity.

"These beneficial changes have the potential to attenuate the development of age-related disorders such as cardiovascular disease," wrote the researchers.

Study: H. Kawano et al., "Dehydroepiandrosterone Supplementation Improves Endothelial Function and Insulin Sensitivity in Men," Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism 88, no. 7 (July 2003):3190-3195.
