An Alzheimer’s patient may be so insistent on driving you may need to take some extreme steps to ensure the person’s safety. One of the first things you can do is to control access to the car keys. Designate one person to do all the driving and give that person exclusive access to the keys. You can even attempt to disable the car itself by removing the distributor cap, the battery or starter wire. You can also give the person a set of keys that looks like his or her older set, but that won’t start the car. In some states it may be best to alert the department of motor vehicles. Write a letter stating your concerns and request that the person’s license be revoked. Be sure to state that the person (include their full name) is a hazard on the road as a result of their Alzheimer’s disease. You may be required to have the person’s physician certify that he or she is no longer able to drive.
