Update: Coenzyme Q10

Many CFIDS patients take coenzyme Q10 and find a significant increase in their general energy and stamina. Until recently, the most commonly recommend type of coenzyme Q10 supplement has been pure CoQ10 in capsule or sublingual form.

But coenzyme Q10—much vitamin E—is oil-soluble, not water-soluble. Recent work with CoQ10 formulations has revealed that when delivered in an oil base, CoQ10's bioavailability is likely to be greatly enhanced.

Another advantage of oil-based CoQ10 is that it is better concentrated, with up to four times more CoQ10 in a single dose than in the current popular product types. Oil-based formulas containing the antioxidant vitamin E are reported to be more stable than other formulas, having a shelf-life of one year or longer.

Coenzyme Q10 is an essential nutrient involved in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the chemical fuel that powers each of our 60 trillion cells. CoQ10 is found in almost every cell in the human body, suggesting that its presence is central to life. Dr. Karl Folkers, who won the Priestly Medal from the American Chemical Society for his research on this interesting nutrient, has discussed how deficiency of CoQ10 can cause a wide range of health problems, including high blood pressure and gum disease.
