Tip of the Week 03/31/03

To help build a supporting relationship with an Alzheimer’s patient it is important to help the person remain independent. Try to avoid taking away responsibilities from the person, and making comments such as, “Here, you can’t do that. Give it to me. I’ll do it for you.” Instead of assuming that the person can’t perform certain tasks, put the emphasis on what the person can do. Additionally, keep in mind the person wants to contribute to the family’s well being. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and cooperation with requests such as, “Can you please help me put these plates on the table?” The person might take twice as long to perform a task but will feel the enjoyment of being helpful. Maintaining your sense of humor can also be helpful. Don’t be afraid to kid around and joke with the individual. A person’s sense of humor can remain intact during the various stages of AD.

We have my mother-in-law w/ AD now living with us. In response to the tips... In regards to her, the tips say to ask for their help. I've tried this, the ONLY things we ask her to do is unload the dishwasher and flush the toilet after she uses it. Most of the time she won't even try to help with anything, and I have made a "remember to flush" note for the bathroom, which most of the time she still won't do. I asked her doctor and he said its partly due to AD but partly just to irritate me. The tips also said to joke with them, that their sense of humour doesn't leave. That doesn't help if she never had a sense of humour. I have known this woman for over 30 years and she has always been the most pesimistic (hope I'm spelling this right) person I have ever met. Everything has always been bad and getting worse. Thanks for letting me vent!
