Alzheimer’s Association and Intel Team Up to Expand Home Care Technology Research

The Alzheimer’s Association and Intel Corporation announced formation of a consortium to spur development of affordable in-home technologies to assist individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners. The Everyday Technologies for Alzheimer Care (ETAC) consortium plans to fund more than $1 million in research to explore new ways to help delay the onset of disabling symptoms, compensate for functional impairment, and postpone or prevent placement in residential care settings.

“The ETAC consortium represents an expansion of the Association’s long-standing scientific research program into medical and electronic technology,” noted William H. Thies, PhD, Alzheimer’s Association vice president of medical and scientific affairs. “ETAC is a first step toward building a consortium of businesses, health care groups, and aging organizations that share the widespread concern that current care systems and models will be inadequate to accommodate the increasing demand for individualized care.”

“Intel has the largest social sciences group of any technical company,” says Eric Dishman, manager of Intel’s Proactive Health Strategic Research Project. Dishman described potential ETAC projects ranging from straightforward sensing devices that might, for example, alert a caregiver when the person with Alzheimer’s has left the bed to more complex assistive systems featuring robotics or artificial intelligence.
