Long Term Osteoarthritis Relief Proven with Glucosamine

Long term relief of osteoarthritis is possible with daily supplementation of glucosamine sulphate, according to a new study. Previously, researchers had only investigated the short term effects of the substance.

The study, published in The Lancet medical journal, was conducted by Professor Jean Reginster and colleagues from CHU Center Ville, Liege, Belgium. Patients received either a daily 1,500mg dose of a form of glucosamine sulphate, or a placebo over a period of three years.

The effects of the supplement were assessed through radiographic images of the patients’ knees, while lifting a weight after one and three years. In the 106 patients who took the palacebo, the space between the joints of the knee narrowed significantly over time. After three years the average loss was measured at 0.31mm.

The patients receiving glucosamine sulphate did not experience any narrowing of space in the knees.

Osteoarthritis literally means "degenerative joint disease." It affects more than 16 million Americans and is the most common form of arthritis. After the age of 45 it occurs ten times more commonly in women than men. Current treatments include medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and in severe cases, joint replacement surgery.
