Link between Lupus and Fibromyalgia Explored

Many lupus patients suffering from fatigue fulfill the American College of Rheumatology’s (ACR) criteria for fibromyalgia (FM) – but is there a link between these two syndromes?

To determine whether FM was more common in lupus patients, the Centre for Rheumatology/Department of Medicine, University College London, interviewed 216 patients attending two separate lupus clinics.

Patients completed questionnaires and were examined for fatigue and FM. Disease activity was measured using the British Isles Lupus Assessment Group index and the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinic (SLICC) damage score. Red blood cell sedimentation rate, complement C3, lymphocyte count, and DNA titer were also measured.

Of the 216 patients, 50% complained of fatigue but only 10% fulfilled the criteria for FM, leading the researchers to believe that additional factors leading to fatigue in lupus patients should be considered.
