My Story: Elaine

I was diagnosed in 1995 with fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome. I had returned to work after a shoulder injury, which developed into a frozen shoulder. Surgery followed and then lots of physical therapy. In retrospect I believe there were multiple factors in the development of these disorder.

Unfortunately when I was stricken, little was known or understood about the underlying contributing factors to these illnesses. I decided to learn all I could doing endless reading and research for clues that might help me learn what to do to turn my health around.

Finally, I had an antibody assay that measures the IGG, IGA and IGE levels of antibodies the immune system is building. This was performed by an osteopathic physician. IGG elevation may indicate an active or latent viral or bacterial infection. IGE antibodies become active in response to allergies. When IGA antibodies are elevated, it is an indication that the immune system is over reacting to specific triggers such as undigested food particles in the bloodstream.

I learned that stress exacerbated my symptoms. I recently found an article that said, "The perpetual release of the stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol sear the body like a drizzle of acid-and may even lead to Alzheimer's disease!" One five-minute episode of mentally and emotionally recalling an experience of anger and frustration caused an immediate but short rise in IGA, followed by a depletion that was so severe it took the body more than six hours to restore normal production!

Needless to say I was under tremendous stress with a son in college and a constant battle with disability insurance. This is an all too familiar experience.

What I learned was that even with a rotation and elimination diet, along with supplementation of nutrients, fasting and trying to detox the body, and keeping a good mental attitude, it may take years before an individual is fully recovered and some may never fully recover depending on function of vital organs like the liver. I have been told that I still have a sluggish liver and metabolism. If we lived in a more perfect world, we would probably recover faster because we wouldn't have issues with environmental toxins, which impede the healing process.

Diet may be the single most important factor in the healing process. When you have a high-fat, processed- food diet, with little fiber, your system has to struggle to get rid of its waste. With a high-fiber, complex- carbohydrate diet your stools become much easier to pass and toxins are more readily eliminated.

I'm sure that many of us who have had to deal with these conditions suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Any program which helps us deal with the stress of this condition should help with the healing process.

Sincerely,
Elaine Wilhelm
