prohealth911: The chat room is now open. Dr Lu is available to answer your questions.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
Bonbonn: Dr., are there any new meds available for this disease?

DrLu: Bonbonn, I am dealing mostly with alternative approaches, such as nutritional supplements, herbs, accupuncture, etc.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
Freda: Welcome Dr. Lu, what course of pain treatment would you take if your patient can't take codeine? My daughter is showing signs already and she is 12.

DrLu: Freda, they should consider accupuncture. Studies show it is a good alternative modality for pain control. Also a form a gentle massage would be good for FM.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
lorie2: Hi, Dr. how long does numbness usually last? Mine has been a couple of months.

DrLu: lorie2, usually the rule of thumb is that for every year that you suffer, it takes about a month to recover. Depending upon the treatment, the recovery time can vary.

DrLu: lorie2, I would also recommend accupuncture for the numbness.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
dee2: Dr. Lu, I've tried all kinds of antidepressants and muscle relaxers. Nothing seems to help, only makes it worse with all the side effects. What can I do to find something that might reallly help me?

dee2: What are some good herbs and vitamins to take for sleep, pain, and brain cognitition?

DrLu: dee2, For sleep, Dr. Teitelbaum usually recommends Ambien, which gives you a deep state of sleep without the hangover feeling. Alternatively, you can use melatonin at low dose, ie., 3mg for sleep or you can use valerian or chamomile.

DrLu: dee2, for the brain fog, I use a high dose of vitamin B-12 injections.

DrLu: dee2, for the brain fog you can also use B-12 sublingual. Also you should be checked for candida overgrowth.

dee2: Thank you, Dr. Lu.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
tweety: What nutritional supplements and herbs do you currently recommend?

DrLu: Tweety, it should be a combination of magnesium and malic acid. Magnesium is important to relax the muscle and for blood supply. Malic acid is important for energy production, so the combination is a the best.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
tweety: thank you, can candida overgrowth cause brain fog?

DrLu: Tweety, Absolutely, Candida overgrowth can cause brain fog.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
dee2: What about for pain? What can I do or take for the pain?

DrLu: dee2, For FM, Magnesium/Malic acid is recommended for muscle pain. Melatonin, valerian, or chamomile for sleep. B-12 for brain fog. Obviously, patients should refrain from consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and caffine, and should be checked for food allergies. Supplements for pain would also include homeopathic remedies, but these are very specific for each individual. Also, I recommend accupuncture and gentle body work.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
Freda: What do you recommend for the candida overgrowth?

DrLu: Freda, For candida overgrowth I recommend Dysbiosis protocol, which involves a detox program and a replacement with lactobacillius. and if the candida problem is severe, on occasions I have to resort to western antifungal medications.

Freda: Thanks, Dr. Lu.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
sunny: What is the latest theory on the cause of CFS?

DrLu: Sunny, I wish you could be at the conference today. There are many theories involving viral, bacterial, toxins, etc. I don't think there is a common consensus on the cause of FM. For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, they are working on a test where the antiviral pathway is shown to be abnormal, and this abnormality is present in about 75-80% of patients with CFS but only about 30% of FM patients. Also there is a theory about HHV6.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
Erin27: Dr. Lu, are you familiar with Gary Carlsen's Candida program which he uses at the Candida Wellness Center in Utah?

DrLu: Erin27, there are many program that work well. I use the one that I am most familiar with.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
lorie2: they tell me I am bipolar manic, could this be confused with FM?

DrLu: lorie2, absolutely, FM is a syndrome with a series of associated syndromes including depression, sleep disorder, cognitive dysfunction, headache, etc. So, depression is a very common part of FM. Also, FM patients were found to be deficient in serotonin levels, which can affect mood. So, antidepressants have been used with sucess in the treatment of FM in combination with other medications and supplements.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
dee2: How much magnesium and malic acid and is there anything else I can take for the pain?

DrLu: dee2, the usual dose of magnesium is 150mg twice per day and malic acid 600mg twice per day. Again, accupuncture is another modality for pain management.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
dee2: What is western antifungal medication?

DrLu: dee2, the antifungal medications I spoke of earlier include sporonax or diflucan, depending upon the sensitivity. You can also use lamisil.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
brains: It can take up to three years to get rid of Candida. Dr. Lu can it make your white cells decline?

DrLu: brains, no candida cannot make your white blood cells decline.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
dee2: What can I do for headaches that are chronic and cause huge lumps to form in back of head that throb and make me dizzy and nausious?

DrLu: dee2, I usually use accupuncture for headaches.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
Freda: What do you recommend for pain when Ultrams don't do the trick?

DrLu: Freda, there are so many pain medications available, but I tend to resort to accupuncture without medications.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
lorie2: I read that people with FM have a different makeup in their blood than normal people, is there any truth is this?

DrLu: lorie2, yes, there are abnormal immune cells and also the antiviral pathway that I mentioned earlier, and the abnormal level of neurotransmitters.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
Erin27: Dr Lu, do you recommend that FM patients avoid anything else in their diet beyond what you listed earlier?

DrLu: Erin27, I also recommend patients avoid simple carbohydrates or sweets.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
kaz: I was told I had too many white cells in my blood, what does this mean?

DrLu: kaz, it could mean a million things. You should see a hematologist to determine the actual cause of the elevated blood cells.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
lorie2: Is there really such a thing as recovery, or just maintenance?

DrLu: lorie2, one should always look on the bright side. There is such a thing as recovery, but as I said before, for every year you suffer, it takes at least a month to recover once you start treatment.

Question directed to Dr. Tony Lu:
lorie: dr. Lu, I got kicked off , did you answer my question about the blood?

DrLu lorie2: Yes, there are abnormal immune cells and also the antiviral pathway that I mentioned earlier, and the abnormal level of neurotransmitters.

prohealth911: For further information regarding these matters, please refer to www.immunesupport.com/library

Freda: Thank you, Dr. Lu for your time.

lorie: Thank you, Dr. Lu.

DrLu: I enjoyed speaking with you all. Good luck in your treatment programs and recovery.

prohealth911: We would like to thank Dr. Lu for his time and expertise in answering our questions.
