It is not unusual for people to eat more as a way of dealing with stress, including the stress of living with a chronic illness. Not only is extra weight unhealthy, but it puts more stress on the muscles. So many factors can play a part in increased weight, which could lower your self-image even more. It isn’t easy to find yourself in this catch-22 situation. The Arthritis Foundation recommends the following general guidelines for anyone with arthritis (they also apply to those with fibromyalgia): • Eat a variety of foods
• Maintain your ideal weight
• Avoid too much fat and cholesterol
• Avoid too much sugar
• Eat foods with enough starch and fiber
• Avoid too much sodium
• Drink alcohol in moderation (watch this carefully – alcohol often interacts with medicine, producing a dangerous combination).
