Some experts believe that people with chronic conditions who don’t have a strong support network are likely to have more pain, be less active, use more medication, and feel more depressed, helpless, and anxious than are people with a support network. Obviously, then, close relationships with others can have a positive effect on your psychological and physical well-being. How well a family copes when faced with health problems depends greatly on their pre-chronic illness (FM or CFS, for example) relationships. Some families pull closer together, united in their determination, and maintain a supportive environment. Sadly, some families sag under the weight of a chronic illness and splinter apart. So, how do successful families manage? Here are some tips:
Communication: By sharing thoughts and feelings, family members better understand each other’s expectations and needs
Tolerance: By maintaining respect for each other’s limitations, family members are less likely to have emotional blowouts with each other
Humor: Like almost every other endeavor in life, a sense of humor can make any burden a little lighter
Support: Successful families are available to provide help and counsel regardless of circumstances.
