Stress can interfere with your ability to sleep, and it can cause or worsen flares. Having a chronic illness can add a new set of challenges and daily adjustments that only increases your susceptibility to stress. Stress is the body's physical, mental and chemical reaction to exciting, dangerous or irritating circumstances. Stress weakens the immune system, adds to anxiety and depression, and the body's physical reaction to stress (tensing muscles, for example), can exacerbate FM and CFS symptoms. Unfortunately, no one can completely avoid stress. You can manage your reaction to stress, however, which will in turn help you manage your chronic illness more effectively.
