According to Katrina Berne, Ph.D., "'Sick home' improvement is necessary for those with environmental sensitivities. Although most people are not in a financial position to build a new, low-toxicity house, many modifications can be made in existing homes to create a more healthful environment. Helpful changes include having adequate ventilation using air-handling systems with activated carbon filters, using HEPA room air filters or purifiers, frequent dusting and vaccuming, avoiding cleaning products to which you are sensitive, keeping knick-knacks and 'dust catchers' to a minimum (including old books and stuffed animals), replacing carpeting (which is a breeding ground for dust mites) with ceramic tile or wood flooring, using low-toxicity paint, sealing the door between the garage and the house, eliminating pesticide use, using chemically inert materials (stainless steel, glass, stone, and solid wood) in place of particleboard, eliminating room-freshening sprays and other scented household products, and sealing off any materials that contain formaldehyde."
