Editor's note: This is the abstract for the editorial written by David Marks introducing a special edition of the Journal of Health Psychology focusing on the PACE trial. The full editorial as well as links to all of the articles in this special edition can be viewed here.

By David F. Marks

Abstract

We are proud that this issue marks a special contribution by the Journal of Health Psychology to the literature concerning interventions to manage adaptation to chronic health problems. The PACE Trial debate reveals deeply embedded differences between critics and investigators. It reveals an unwillingness of the co-principal investigators of the PACE trial to engage in authentic discussion and debate. It leads one to question the wisdom of such a large investment from the public purse (£5million) on what is a textbook example of a poorly done trial.

This special edition of the Journal of Health Psychology shines a clear light on the various and many shortcomings of the PACE trial.

That patients have been subjected to psycho-social based therapies, such as CBT and GET, as their primary treatment option for so long is a travesty.

Let's hope, serious biomedical research funding is now put in place, and that treatments addressing the physiology of the disease can quickly follow.

The suffering of patients inappropriately pushed into exercise programmes has gone on much too long.

Thank you to all involved with putting this special edition together.

I hope the DISGUSTING OLD FAT NEO-LIBERAL HYPOCRITE' and the OL' SLEAZEBAG, (as their colleague referred to the editors of this journal who resigned in protest over this issue) don't let the door hit them on the backside on their way out.
