Meds vs. No Meds
|
I am just recently diagnosed with PD, although I've had symptoms for a couple of years. From everything I've researched and read, the symptoms of the meds are worse than the symptoms of the disease. So, I'm wondering, can you just wait to start the meds? If I do, what can I expect in progression of the disease? Appreciate your input. Mary

Ask 6 neuro, and you will get 6 different opinions. It is a progressive disease, and in my nonmedical opinion if meds help why not use them?I've been on stalevo and mirapex for many years, and although they cause some problems I would be bed ridden without them.I've always wondered if you wait untill you are really in bad shape will the meds help?Wish you the best Ed

I understand what you're saying. The more I read about this disease the more confused I get about the outlook. I am really concerned about one of the side effects mentioned -- hallucinations. Have you experienced these? Mary

I would encourage you to try the new drug, Azilect. It does not have the side effects of Sinemet, but may be neuroprotective. That is to say, it may prevent or slow the progression of pd. That being said, I would also like to say that I used Sinemet very successfully for over 11 years, and am still on it 22 years after my diagnosis. At that time, a response to Sinemet was considered diagnostic. I have had DBS and get more benefit from Sinemet than before surgery. If you have other questions, please write to me at pearlinak@hotmail.com. Pearl
