What are Essential Fatty Acids?
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are the main structural components of the body’s cell membranes. Therefore, a balanced intake of fatty acids is necessary for healthy cell function. EFAs cannot be synthesized by the body and must be provided through diet and supplementation. There are two primary types of EFAs – Omega 3 and Omega 6. These fatty acids are the precursors of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that the body converts to hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.
