Round and round it goes. Chronically infected people develop a general immune compromised condition. Immune compromised people develop multiple infections, and become hypersensitive to minor pathogens and allergens that do not bother the healthy. Inflamation from these hypersensitivities causes pain, and over time weakens and impedes immune response. This causes chronic infection. Which came first, chicken or egg? Wrong question. It is a feedback cycle. Round and round it goes. Concentrating just on killing pathogens, only avoiding allergens and chemicals, just relieving pain and inflamation, or just strengthening the immune system, will not do. All of these must be done, together, in balance, without over stressing any one bodily system, or the entire human being. It is the most delicate balancing act imaginable, very difficult to manage and accomplish. That is why this is a perplexing problem. It is way beyond pointing a finger, proclaiming a diagnosis, and prescribing a pill. That is the old medicine. We are in a whole new world here, much like the very different political, social , and natural environment we find ourselves living in now. The old methods, politics, and medicine are irrelevant here. A new awareness of simultaneous synchronistic processes must be learned , and then acted upon. As CFS patients we are aware on a basic level that we must take in all the pieces of expert advice , discard the emphasis that each expert puts on the individual pieces, and then reassemble them from our own experience and perspective. That is because we are unfortunately the only ones who know what is going on here from the whole perspective, a privileged but lonely place to exist.
