Iodine Deficiency & HypoT
|
Finding more and more info on this deficiency going on in the U.S. Reading a lot of info on line and in health magazines (Life Extension Foundation) just published a 5 page commentary on this critical issue. I just read reviews on Dr. David Derry's book: Breast Cancer & Iodine. Found this on Amazon. Quite enlightening. Dr. David Brownstein has a well accepted book on Iodine too. It looks like many of our HypoT issues could be lessened if we get proper Iodine in our bodies.
The LEF commentary went on to say that a TSH of 1.4 or less is ideal. My TSH is below 1.

Sensiva for Fibrocystic Breast Disease
|
Have you seen the ads on TV for this OTC nutrient beverage? It's got 5X the RDA of Iodine per serving, 100% RDA for Selenium, some GLA (fatty acid) & a few B-vits. Spendy. The website doesn't recommend it for women with thyroid disorders, though. Excess iodine can be a problem for people with Graves Disease. I realize this is a little "off" your topic Jam -- don't intend to hijack your thread. Ya gotta wonder how many women w/fibrocystic breasts would benefit from just a little (inexpensive) increase in iodine consumption. Wonder how many have undxd hypoT ??? Best wishes.

What is it called and I'll look it up. The RDA on iodine is a very low 150 mcg...with the 1 drop of Iosol I'm now getting 1830 mcg and feeling good about that. The more I read the more I wonder and feel we are so jerked around by these crazy RDA's... Isn't Graves HyperT? Oh I agree with your comment on how many women go thru needless medical procedures since they go to conventional docs and you know these docs never talk nutrition and minerals and supps, etc. etc...deficiencies!!!!!! In my cynic mind; they would lose business. It's true.. And there has got to be a huge number with undx'd HypoT...I was one of them for 10 LONG years.

Limited Intro
|
I think the Sensiva beverage is being "Piloted" in only 2 areas of the country -- TX & the Northwest. Graves Disease generally is hyper though people can have Graves problems combined w/Hashi's, as well as Graves probs after thyroid has been "destroyed" with RAI. My brother's got the combo -- took the RAI for the hyper/cardiac probs, then watched his Graves antibodies skyrocket as the body attempted to deal with the "damaged" thyroid from the RAI. He developed severe TED (thyroid eye-disease) & was on high-dose pred for several yrs for the TED (which caused other long-term health probs, incl. osteoporosis in a 45 yo male. Now he's gunshy on following the docs' recommendations for surgery, since they said the RAI would fix everything ...

Well Snooz/I just looked at the product

500% Iodine so that must be a little over 600 mcg of some kind of Iodine...wonder which form? I'm just glad that I'm taking the 1 drop of Iosol now... I don't touch table salt and sea salt gets only a little iodine in it. I avoid a lot of foods that are loaded with sodium and that's just what it is sodium and probably not much iodine if any. That's how I'm beginning to understand it all re: iodine. Sorry about your brother, that's terrible. RAI is that some kind of radiation therapy? So, do you deal with any thyroid issues? jam

RAI

Yeah, radioactive iodine. Burns the thyroid gland. Poison Koolaid (or pill). Doc dresses up like Darth Vader to pass you the med, then the patient has to stay isolated for a while as he becomes "hot" / radioactive. My brother's 2nd grandkid was born during his RAI & he had to wait several weeks to see it. For myself, I guess my thyroid issues are comparitively mild ... though I do believe I was hypoT for about 20 yrs before I got a dx, which I got ONLY because I ordered my own thyroid panel & took the results in to the doc. Probably the worst part of those yrs. was the heavy & prolonged perimenopausal bleeding starting at about age 35, I only got a break for about 5 days every month. Eventually had an endometrial ablation about 8 yrs. later. I've often wondered if the world would be any different for women if our boy docs got to experience something similar, heavy bleeding 25 days per month, every month. I couldn't believe I was the only person in several generations of both sides of my family not to be affected by thyroid problems ... but the docs kept saying everything was OK, of course just with TSH (old ref ranges). When I took in the complete thyroid panel results with elevated ABs, & low frees, I started to get some respect. Although my PHP says he "doesn't believe in T3." !!!! Makes me wonder whether he skipped a few physiology lectures in med school. This is the same doc who thinks I'm a medical oddity because I had low frees with a normal TSH -- "almost never happens." IMO, it never happens BECAUSE THEY NEVER LOOK for it. I do struggle w/low free T3, even when I was on slow release Cytomel in addition to my T4 med. (T3 courtesy of a knowledgeable Naturopath who unfortunately isn't covered under our current insurance.) I tended to run hyper at night on T3, probably an adrenal thing. I do think I was likely iodine-deficient at one point because I did limit salt intake for many yrs due to borderline high BP. And I'm not very big on seafood. But I think I've remedied any deficiency that might have been hanging around. I'm not sold on the high doses of Iodoral, but I do have a bottle of it, have been baking it into my homemade gluten-free goods. Our entire family is GF. Anyway, sorry, I think I did hijack your thread. But things have been slow on prohealth today.
