Here we are at the beginning of a new year – 2019!
Do you make New Year’s Resolutions?
Or is January 1 just another typical day?
Many Americans decide January 1 is the day they will begin to:
- Quit smoking
- Start a new weight loss program
- Be more environmentally responsible
- Eat more fruits and vegetables
- Exercise more – or at all
- Get out of debt
- Get rid of clutter
- A combination of all the above!
In 2018, a survey of more than 1,100 people with nearly 40% responding, showed that the #1 New Year’s Resolution was tied between eat healthier, get more exercise and save (more) money. These are all worthy resolutions for someone with fibromyalgia. Interestingly, about 30% of the respondents claimed no resolutions.
Sadly, for many, the resolution is forgotten by the time February rolls around. One study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology showed that fewer than half of the individuals who made a resolution were keeping to their pledge in June.
Why do we make resolutions – pledges to ourselves – and then not keep them?
Should someone with a chronic illness even try?
I sat down this afternoon to craft this message of hopefulness about our ability to keep learning, to being better (in every way) than we were yesterday, and most importantly, to pace ourselves – and realized my fuel tank was low.
What can I say that you haven’t heard before, something that will be inspiring and helpful?
So, I did a quick search on ProHealth for the word “resolution” and 64 pages of results popped up. I read several of the articles and felt my energy gauge inching up!
We can do this.
