An appraisal of Thomas Lewis’ effort syndrome

MCM: Effort S incorporates the concept of effort beyond the
tolerable limit on the performance-arousal curve, leading to
chronic exhaustion and ill health. The triad consist of
depletion of the alkaline buffering system, the 'reaction'
type of breathing now termed 'hyperventilation', and
oversensitivity of the sympathetic NS.Features include
abbreviation of the breath-holding time, fatigue, panic,
arrhythmias, respiratory alkalosis, hypocapnia…Author
favors Occam's principle in not multiplying diagnostic
explanations (i.e., CFS) when Effort Syndrome suffices.
