Q: How many people with Lyme disease also have mold illness, and is there any way to distinguish symptoms of Borreliosis and co-infections from those of mold?

A:  Good question! Lyme and mold illness symptoms are very similar and difficult, if not impossible, to tease apart.  This is because both trigger the same innate immune system inflammatory response.  Your lab test results, however, can give you a clue about what is going on in the body. If you do a C4a test (done by National Jewish) and the results are above 10,000, you may have mold and/or viruses, in addition to Lyme.  Also, if you do an MRI of the head (without contrast) using a global NeuroQuant analysis, this may help you to tease apart the two.  Mold specialist Ritchie Shoemaker, MD discovered that there’s a very unique “fingerprint,” or pattern that Lyme disease will leave in the brain, compared to mold. The results of this test will show doctors whether the primary source of inflammation in a patient’s body is due to mold or Lyme disease

There are, unfortunately, no statistics to show how many Lyme patients also have mold illness, but if you are not getting better from your current Lyme treatment, mold is probably the number 1 reason why!

    Dr. Patel,

What is the unique fingerprint/pattern that lyme will leave in the brain as you mentioned in this article? I have researched it and can not come up with an answer. I am asking as a loved one has abnormal brain findings without cause and a lyme literate Dr. mentioned it could be lyme. I really want to know what this “fingerprint” looks like. Thanks in advance.
