Feature Articles

* NIH CFS Workshop Report: David S. Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., on Autonomic Nervous System & Orthostatic Intolerance

Rich Van Konynenburg, Ph.D., reports, “Dr. Goldstein’s talk at the NIH Workshop on CFS on June 12, 2003 in Bethesda, MD, included a brief introduction to the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the sympathetic arm of the ANS in particular, a discussion of his work on orthostatic intolerance, a new concept of stress different from that of Hans Selye, and an experimental technique for visualizing the sympathetic nerves in the heart.”

* Fibromyalgia Isn’t Depression – But Depression May Add to Patients’ Woes

Depression doesn’t cause the pain of fibromyalgia (FM), but clinical depression can deepen an FM patient’s experience of pain. The findings come in a report by Thorsten Giesecke, M.D., to this weeks’ annual scientific meeting of the American College of Rheumatology. Giesecke is a member of the University of Michigan research team, led by Daniel J. Clauw, M.D., using state-of-the-art technology to study FM.

* IBS Patients May Benefit From Leaving Certain Foods Out of Their Diet

Can avoiding certain foods help to relieve the general misery associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? That’s the intriguing possibility raised by two new studies that show that fat and fructose, the simple sugar found in honey, fruits, and some soft drinks, may contribute to symptoms of the misunderstood gastrointestinal syndrome that affects more than 1 in 10 Americans.
