The medical charity Allergy UK offers an excellent website (AllergyUK.org) for the education & support of “people with allergy, food intolerance, and chemical sensitivity.”

One new feature on the site is a growing list of clearly presented video clips, created to help people learn what causes their symptoms and manage them properly – ideally reducing used of prescribed medication and improving quality of life.

Current clips in the growing series (at AllergyUK.org/info_videos.aspx) include:

What is Allergy? (4.5 min – “Extremely interesting & well worth watching.”)

“This video describes how allergy develops in the human body from the first contact with a specific allergen, known as sensitization into a second and subsequent contact with that allergen becoming an allergic reaction.”

Allergy Testing (7 minutes)

“This describes the four main allergy tests currently used in National Health Service Allergy clinics, namely:

• Skin Prick Tests;

• Radioallergosorbent Tests – Specific Allergen blood test;

• Patch Tests to identify those allergens which come into contact with skin;

• And Challenge Tests carried out under medical supervision, normally in a hospital.”

Food Allergy & Food Intolerance – The Difference (13 minutes)

“This video describes the difference between food allergy and food intolerance. It is very important to know what foods cause your allergic reactions as this can be extremely severe and even life threatening. This is not the case for those with food intolerance symptoms, however it can still make someone feel very poorly and avoidance of the culprit food is very important just as it is for those with food allergy….”

And For Those Who Suspect They May Have a Food Intolerance (an estimated 45% of the UK population)…

Allergy UK has created a new Food Intolerance Awareness (FIA) subsite offering details on major food intolerance-related conditions – including asthma, egg intolerance, exczema, gluten intolerance, IBS, lactose intolerance, migraine, MSG intolerance, and more.
