Experts Say Consumers Can Eat Around Toxins in Fish
“We know that eating fish – which are full of protein and omega-3 fatty acids – promotes good health,” said Charles Santerre, a foods and nutrition associate professor who specializes in chemical contaminants in food. “At the same time, we know that some fish, including commercial fish, can be harmful. The consumer – especially a woman in her childbearing years –needs to be discerning.”
Vitamins C and E May Enhance Effectiveness of Insulin for Diabetes
Boosting insulin with vitamins C and E may improve the drug’s effectiveness for treating diabetes. A University of California Irvine College of Medicine study has found that the popular antioxidant supplements not only enhance insulin’s ability to reduce blood sugar, but also lower the risks of organ damage that can occur despite insulin treatments. The study appears in the January issue of Kidney International.
Mayo Clinic Study Eases Fears of Lost Mental Function in Old Age
A new Mayo Clinic study shows that the fears of many related to living into one’s 90s and beyond — getting lost in your own neighborhood; losing the ability to take care of financial affairs; having a driver’s license revoked; ending up in a nursing home — are in many cases unfounded.
Drinking Water can Help Your Diet
Drinking water can help you in your efforts to lose weight as a means of controlling appetite and as an alternative to high calorie beverages such as sodas and coffee, says a Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center nutritionist.

Research Spotlight: Maximum Wellness Formula
A UCLA research team has discovered that a popular health supplement and antioxidant vitamins may help prevent atherosclerosis, or blockage of the blood vessels. The findings are reported in the Jan. 13 online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
“Our findings suggest that people who take dietary supplements of L-arginine, an amino acid, and antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, might be at a lower risk for atherosclerosis and heart disease,” said Dr. Louis J. Ignarro, a 1998 Nobel laureate in medicine and UCLA professor of molecular and medical pharmacology. “This is significant because cardiovascular disease is still the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.”
