A small controlled trial (titled “Manipulation of Visceral Sensitivity and Immune System Activation in IBS” – ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00418340) will test the ability of therapy with beneficial bacteria (a probiotic supplement) to affect immune activation and associated visceral nerve sensitivity by addressing bacterial infection in the gut.

The study:

  • Is sponsored by North West London Hospitals NHS Trust

  • Will recruit a small number of subjects from outpatient clinics

  • Has set a start date of December 2007.
