* Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Guidelines for Doctors

John Richardson, MB BS, reports, “In the U.K. for 4-5 decades, we have found that an initial illness caused by one of the enteroviruses, was the most frequent cause of the ensuing illness known as M.E (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). These enteroviruses included the three polioviruses, the ECHO group and also the Coxsackie A and B groups. Unlike pesticides and other inorganic substances, viruses can replicate and mutate, hence there can be epidemic and endemic outbreaks. In other countries, other viruses have been involved. In the U.K. the Epstein-Barr virus has been claimed as an initiating cause of this illness.”

* The Internist’s Role in Treating Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

According to Deborah F. Robinson, M.D., “Internists often have to know about and prescribe a great variety of medications to stabilize and improve the quality and quantity of life for an individual, without causing untoward side effects or drug interactions or toxicities. The internist is thus the first and usually only specialist best suited to evaluate, diagnose and effectively treat the conditions of fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.”

* From Cared For to Caregiver: Coping with Tough Times and CFS & FM

Coping Corner columnist Eunice Beck, RN, writes, “Out of control. That’s how my life has been in the past few months. Due to a serious illness in the family, I am now the caregiver, rather than the cared for.” Read Eunice’s advice for getting through tough times.
