Editor-in-Chief: Karen Lee Richards
In 1997, Karen Lee Richards, a fibromyalgia patient herself, co-founded the nonprofit organization now known as the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) and served as its vice-president for eight years. She was also the executive editor of NFA’s Fibromyalgia AWARE, the very first full-color, glossy magazine devoted to FM and other invisible illnesses. After leaving the NFA, Karen served as the Guide to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for About.com, a New York Times company, and then as the Chronic Pain Health Guide for The HealthCentral Network.
Karen wrote for ProHealth for four years before assuming the position of Fibromyalgia Editor in 2012. She is currently serving as ProHealth’s Editor-in-Chief.
Fibromyalgia Editor: Cindy Leyland
Cindy has a lifetime’s experience with fibromyalgia – Cindy and most of the women in her family live with the illness. She profiles her mother’s experience in her NIH Biosketch:
“You look really good today.” We heard this so many times from the many different doctors my mom saw to try to find out why it was so difficult to hold her head up, why her back and neck and arms – really everywhere – hurt so badly she could hardly stand it. We even heard it when she was using methadone, hydromorphone, Lidoderm, and Gabapentin to control the pain – without success. Finally, in August of 2006, she declared she was done. The pain was still there and she was tired of fighting. She was dead in December. And… she still looked good.
I simply do not believe there is nothing that can be done to help people like my mom. Her diagnosis of fibromyalgia at least gave her a word she could use to describe what was wrong with her, but neither the diagnosis nor the medications she took allowed her to live a full life, a life of quality. There has to be a better way.
Cindy also serves as the Director of Program Operations at the Center for Practical Bioethics and the PAINS Project Director. Previously, she managed a project promoting pediatric palliative care in Kansas City and worked with an agency dedicated to the elimination of poverty in four northwest Missouri counties where she oversaw direct emergency service delivery and community organizing projects.
Cindy graduated from Benedictine College’s Executive MBA program, with emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship and transformational strategic planning. She served on the board of Synergy Services and regularly volunteers with Synergy’s domestic violence shelter, Safe Haven. She lives in Kansas City with her husband, enjoys hiking, reading, and being Gramma Cindy.
