The second CFIDS Matching Grant Fundraiser ended December 31, 1992 with over $164,000 raised by our members and friends. With the help of Mr. Marc Iverson, president of The CFIDS Association of America, and Mr. Richard Carson, president of the CFIDS Buyers Club, who each pledged to raise $62,000 in matching funds, we were able to raise a total of $289,281. That’s nearly $40,000 beyond our goal of $250,000!
Much of the success of our 1992 fundraising campaign is owed to the CFIDS Buyers Club and Richard Carson, the nation’s leading individual fundraiser for CFIDS research. The CADS Buyers Club, an independent organization, carries a wide variety of nutritional supplements frequently used by people with CADS and offers them at discount prices.
As staunch supporters of Association programs, the Buyers Club has contributed readily and generously to Association fundraising activities since 1990. Mr. Carson, who spent countless volunteer hours raising the funds necessary to secure one-half of the matching grant, traveled to Charlotte to meet personally with Mr. Iverson and the Association’s staff and deliver his organization’s impressive contribution.
Our members came through by digging in and supplying the most important donations: those needed to total $125,000 in order to secure the matching grant raised by Mr. Carson and Mr. Iverson.
Although our goal was considered extremely ambitious, through Association mailings and telephone and personal contacts, members were moved to give as they never had before. They worked together and called on family and friends to provide additional support. And even after the deadline of December 31, 1992, donations continued to arrive. (Although contributions received after the $125,000 matching grant had been secured could not be “doubled,” they will still be used to directly fund the Association’s critical research and advocacy programs.)
With the introduction of a new membership program, some participants became “Sustaining Members” of the Association by making a special contribution of $25 in addition to their annual membership dues. These individuals will be acknowledged in a future issue of the Chronicle.
All of these resources are being used to support our CFIDS research programs (80%) and the advocacy efforts of our Washington lobbyist, Tom Sheridan (20%). Donations are appropriated by the Executive Committee under the advisement of the Scientific and Public Policy Advisory Committees.
In addition to funding the critical research of Drs. Paul Cheney, Elaine DeFreitas, Sidney Grossberg, Walter Gunn, Nancy Klimas, and Leonard Jason. We hope to expand the program to include others. With several of our researchers submitting papers to major medical journals and a new administration in Washington, D.C., opportunities exist to make extraordinary progress this year. We believe that 1993 is going to be a breakthrough year for CFIDS, and the monies contributed by our members and friends will make dramatic advances in research and advocacy possible.
From the Board of Directors and staff of The CFIDS Association of America, thank you to all who generously supported our second Matching Grant Fundraiser. You have made a tremendous difference!
