Multis Improve Heart Health, Plasma Nutrient Levels

DALLAS–Multivitamin supplements with antioxidant properties have beneficial effects on homocysteine and LDL oxidation measures, according to researchers at The Cooper Institute. Their placebo-controlled study was published in the October issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition (22, 5:400-7, 2003) (

Researchers originally conducted an open-label pilot trial of a 24-ingredient multivitamin formula and found it improved homocysteine concentrations and LDL cholesterol oxidation after 24 weeks. To further investigate their findings, researchers used the same formula and randomly assigned 182 subjects to take the vitamin or placebo for six months.

After the study period, researchers saw increases in plasma concentrations of vitamin B6, B12, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene. In addition, homocysteine levels (high levels of which are a possible risk factor for heart disease) and LDL cholesterol oxidation rates were also reduced in subjects taking the supplement compared to those taking placebo.
