The human body uses calcium ions (written as Ca2+) to tell every cell what to do next. It’s called a signaling molecule. These types of molecules dictate every activity in the cell. They do everything from telling cells when to divide and create new cells to producing essential nutrients to undergoing apoptosis, or cell death.

Calcium ions have a special role in muscle tissue. They help regulate muscle contraction and relaxation. Here’s how that works…

When a muscle needs to contract (flex), calcium ions get pumped from a little storage area, or organelle, inside a muscle cell. The organelle is called SERCA (short for sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+). When it’s time to relax, those calcium ions get pumped back into the SERCA.

This process goes for all three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and smooth muscle. Skeletal muscles are those that allow you to move, the ones that ache after exercise or effort. Cardiac muscle refers to your heart. Smooth muscle includes the lungs and airways, the intestines and the bladder.

If levels of these calcium ions become unbalanced, cells go haywire. Think of it like what happens when too many programs are open on a computer. It tries to do too much. There aren’t enough resources. The computer crashes.

This requires the body to strictly regulate the flow of calcium ions within all cells. A cell without enough calcium may not follow a normal cell lifecycle. A cell with too much will get to excited and die. A muscle cell won’t contract and relax as it should.

To control calcium ion levels, the body uses pumps. They’re enzymes called Ca2+ATPase. In muscle cells these enzymes resides in the SERCA membrane. In other cells these enzymes can be found in a cell’s plasma membrane, the outer wall of a cell.

When the pump works right, calcium flows smoothly as needed and triggers the necessary cellular activity. In muscle cells, it flows out of the SERCA causing a muscle cell to contract. When it’s time to relax, the pump reverses and the calcium ions get pumped back until they’re needed again.

Problems start when the pump doesn’t work right, if there aren’t enough pumps, or if the membrane, the wall that keeps the calcium ions “in”, is weak and allows calcium ions to escape. When this happens, muscle and organs like the bladder don’t work right. Unfortunately today, many factors can create this situation.

Why Bladder and Muscle Problems Can Affect Anyone at Any Age

The human body naturally produces fewer enzymes as it ages. This includes Ca2+ATPase. That explains why for the longest time over-active bladder and incontinence was a condition of “old age.”

Today though, new factors can impact an individual’s Ca2+ATPase levels. Environmental toxins play a big part. Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, mercury and fluoride disrupt enzyme production. They also alter the structure of cell membranes and interfere with the normal flow into and out of a cell.

The enzyme may also be related to sleep disturbances. A proper flow of calcium ions in brain cells helps to regulate the building and breaking-down of melatonin, the substance your body uses to induce sleep. Studies show that without enough melatonin, sleep disorders occur.  Other factors play a role in melatonin formation but the calcium ion flow plays a central role as it directs the process directly related to sleep and sleep quality.

As important as melatonin is to sleep, it may play a greater role in the brain. Researchers at the University of Houston found melatonin helped to slow brain degeneration in some patients.  Another study showed it decreased the chance of cell death caused by proteins associated with some degenerative disorders.  A lot more research may be needed to confirm the impact of calcium balance on brain health, but so far the results produced have been positive.
