Researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine are conducting a research study investigating treatment preferences among persons with fibromyalgia.  You are being asked to be in this research study if you are a man or a woman between the ages of 18 and 65 and if you are currently struggling with symptoms of fibromyalgia.  The study is designed to learn more about fibromyalgia treatment preferences. If you join the study, you will complete several short questionnaires which takes approximately 30-45 minutes. If you complete the study, you will have the option to be entered into a drawing to receive a $50 gift card as compensation. The odds of receiving the gift card are 1 in 50.

Possible discomforts or risks include feeling psychological discomfort when answering some of the questions; however, you may choose to discontinue the questionnaire at any time. There may also be risks the researchers have not thought of.  Every effort will be made to protect your privacy and confidentiality by using a secret code to label your information instead of your name or any other personal information. The only information that could identify you that will be collected is your email address.  Giving us this information is optional and will be used only for the drawing where you have a chance to win a gift card. This information will be collected through a separate survey and it will not be possible to connect your answers to the study questions with your personal information. The research is being paid for by the Department of Family Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine.

You have a choice about being in this study.  You do not have to be in this study if you do not want to be.

You may have questions about your rights as someone in this study.  If you have questions, you can call the COMIRB (the responsible Institutional Review Board).   Their number is (303) 724-1055. You can also contact Sam Hubley, PhD, Department of Family Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine at Samuel.Hubley@ucdenver.edu.

By completing this survey, you are agreeing to participate in this research study.

  1. IanH says:

    1. It does not ask how long you have been ill.
    2. It does not ask whether the illness was “diagnosed”
    3. It placed energy related questions beneath a question related to emotionality. eg. “Over the past 4 weeks, how often have your been bothered by the following problems?

    a. Feeling nervous, anxious, on edge, or worrying a lot about different things, If you check “not at all” for (a)then skip b-g.

    4. It confused or blurred the meaning of effort as in this question:
Had difficulty performing the work or other activities (eg it took extra effort).

Most people with FM take more time because they cannot muster the extra effort required.

I am not sure what their thesis is but this questionnaire will have so many holes in it, it is virtually useless.

They should get a professional to design their questionnaires or at least have them critiqued before using them on people.
