Feature Articles

* Interview with Dartmouth Researcher Hillary White, Ph.D.: Treating Fibromyalgia with Testosterone

For Hillary D. White, it was all very personal. An associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Dartmouth Medical School, Dr. White was dealing with the stress of applying for a federal grant when she began to realize how much her back and legs were hurting, and how tired she was feeling. She soon recognized that her symptoms were those of fibromyalgia. Read about her research and how she effectively manages fibromyalgia.

* Lack of Vitamin D Linked to Pain – Fibromyalgia News

There is new evidence that small amounts of unprotected sun exposure could be good for you. Earlier studies have linked vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk for several cancers. Now comes word that it may also be a major cause of unexplained muscle and bone pain – which could be a major breakthrough for many fibromyalgia patients.

* Eunice Beck, RN, on Support and Coping in Times of Special Need with Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Coping Corner columnist Eunice Beck, RN, writes, “Usually when we hear the word ‘support,’ we think of the emotional aspects, but there are countless types of support: encouragement, to provide strength, help, assist, care for, look after, maintain, reinforce, bolster, augment, sustain, boost, supplement, feed. And this ‘caring for’ can come in many ways, from people you may not have even known prior to their appearance in your time of need.”

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: Vitamins C and E

A study involving more than 4,700 participants strongly suggests that the combination of vitamins C and E lowers the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. As the lead investigator Dr. Peter P. Zandi told Reuters Health, properly conducted prevention trials are needed to confirm the results. However, “because vitamins E and C are relatively non-toxic and are believed to have wide-ranging health benefits, they may offer a very attractive strategy for preventing Alzheimer’s disease.”

The findings come from the Cache County Study, which looked at the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in terms of genetic and environmental risk factors. As part of the study, people aged 65 and older were assessed for dementia between 1995 and 1997 and again between 1998 and 2000.
