Rheumatoid Arthritis Study (posted March 2004)

If you have rheumatoid arthritis you might qualify for a new University of Arizona study on strengthening your muscles. It's the Strength-Training and Remicade Study. People with RA can have reduced muscle mass, strength, and cardiorespiratory fitness, functional capacity and bone mass. They also can have increased fat mass, fatigue, pain and depression. Because of all that, they can be at increased risk for heart disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. Aerobics and strength-training exercise have been shown to decrease these risks. The study is designed to see how much exercise is best to help lower the risk. Participants must be from 20-60 years old, currently taking Remicade, and have no joint replacements. Each participant will have four months of individualized, supervised strength-training and be taking the drug, Remicade. Call or e-mail Hilary Flint-Wagner at 621-7592 for more information.
