Feature Articles

* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia: The Brain/Sleep Connection

According to Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., M.R.O., “A survey of over 1,000 patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) showed that prior to their illness fewer than 1% had disturbed sleep, whereas during their illness this rose to over 90%. Sleep disturbance is a key feature of both CFS (ME) and FMS with hormonal influences which have wide repercussions.”

* Fibromyalgia Comes in 3 Shapes and Sizes

Mood problems have traditionally been thought to be among the most common fibromyalgia symptoms. But now researchers are saying that psychological disturbances are actually found in only a small number of patients. Researchers identified three distinct subtypes of fibromyalgia symptoms and found higher than normal psychological disturbances to be present in only one of the groups.

* Disturbed Neuroendocrine-Immune Interactions in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

According to the researchers of this study, “In view of the generalized symptomatology in CFS, the search for a single factor cause does not seem to be the most adequate approach. We hypothesized that the symptomatology in CFS may result from abnormalities in interorgan communication rather than from abnormalities in a single organ system.”

RESEARCH SPOTLIGHT: Ginkgo & CoQ10

An open, uncontrolled study was undertaken to measure the subjective effects of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) combined with a Ginkgo biloba extract in volunteer subjects with clinically diagnosed fibromyalgia syndrome.

Anecdotal reports from patients with fibromyalgia syndrome have claimed benefits from the use of these nutritional supplements. The aim of this study was to determine if these reports could be substantiated in a pilot clinical trial.

Patient questioning had determined that poor quality of life was a major factor in the condition and a quality-of-life questionnaire was used to measure potential benefit. To read the results of this promising study, click on the link below:
