If worrying about your diet is giving you ulcers, then broccoli might be just the food to make you feel better. A laboratory study found that a chemical in broccoli eradicates Helicobactor pylori, a bacterium that causes ulcers and raises the risk of stomach cancer. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, tested the chemical, sulforaphane, on mice and human cells. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University, and France’s National Center for Scientific Research, exposed bacteria-infected stomach cells to sulforaphane in amounts comparable to those obtained through a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables, such as cabbage, kale, and broccoli. Of these, broccoli contains by far the highest amounts of sulforaphane.
