In a comprehensive study of nearly 28,000 women, researchers at Harvard Medical School found that blood levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein that indicates inflammation, is a more accurate predictor of heart attack risk than total cholesterol or even LDL, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol. Women with the highest levels of CRP were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular event than women with the lowest levels of CRP.
