Breathing correctly is essential for increasing the flow of oxygen into our blood and helping us to relax. Without sufficient oxygen, our system cannot function effectively. Learning how to properly breathe even for a few seconds can dramatically increase the oxygen exchange and reduce stress.
Place your hands on your abdomen, using your navel as a reference point, and breathe so that you are able to feel your abdomen expand and contract. Repeat this exercise several times using a slow, comfortable pace, and feel the tension leave your muscles and clear your mind.
Schedule times during the day to breathe for relaxation. We suggest several times in the morning and afternoon. Mark the times on your daily calendar or electronic reminder. Learning how to breathe properly is an important first step to relieve stress and discomfort.
