Here’s a switch: instead of cutting foods out of your diet, try adding them in. That is, if they’re among the nutritional powerhouses – packed with nutrients, good-for-you fats, fiber and calcium. These foods can help fight cancer, heart disease, and many other illnesses.

So how do you get more of this good stuff? Don’t aim to completely overhaul your diet, advises Connie Diekman, R.D., a dietician and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. Instead, add a few good foods here and there. “Work on introducing one food at a time. Try adding a vegetable to your breakfast each day,” says Diekman. Allow your taste buds and comfort level to expand gradually. “Real change is slow, and that’s perfectly fine,” she adds. So decide which foods you need more of, and slowly add them to your diet for long-term benefits.
