While not all fats are good – saturated and total fat intake have been linked with an increased risk of diabetes – there are several beneficial fats that are thought to improve heart, brain and metabolic health. Fatty acids, for example, are an important part of normal homeostasis (a state of equilibrium).

The human body can produce all but two groups of fatty acids – omega 3s and omega 6s – which are known as essential fatty acids (EFAs) becuase they must be obtained through the diet. These so-called “good” fats are suspected to improve the odds against developing Type II diabetes among other health benefits.
