A recent poll found that most periodontists believe a well-balanced diet that includes the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C and calcium can improve the health of your teeth and gums.

Eating a healthy diet helps your body resist infections such as periodontal disease – an inflammatory bacterial infection – by keeping your immune system in peak condition. Calcium is essential for the growth of strong bones to hold your teeth in place. “Research shows that those who consume at least three servings of calcium a day have a significantly lower rate of periodontal disease,” says Kenneth Bueltmann, a dentist and president of the American Academy of Periodontology.

Vitamin C, on the other hand, is key for tissue health. It’s best to get these nutrients through food but if you can’t, taking the RDA of vitamin C and calcium may be advisable.
