MSM (methyl sulfonyl methane) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound found in a variety of foods. MSM has been claimed to play an important role in collagen synthesis, which is helpful for arthritic conditions. In a double-blind study, Ronald Lawrence of UCLA School of Medicine found that about 80 percent of arthritis patients who ingested 2,250 mg of MSM daily for six weeks showed improvement in their pain symptoms, while 18 percent of those on the placebo experienced an improvement at six weeks.
