The body requires a variety of different minerals for proper functioning. They include, among others, sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorous, and magnesium. In addition, the body needs trace minerals such as chromium, copper, fluoride, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc.

Some minerals, such as iron and calcium, are stored in a reservoir in the body and can be released during periods of a dietary deficiency. Most minerals, however, tend not to be stored and have to be taken in with the diet regularly.
