In 1998, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released a consensus statement acknowledging the lack of well-designed and controlled research on acupuncture. However the statement also said enough evidence exists to show clearly that acupuncture helps relieve pain after dental surgery as well as the nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, anesthesia or pregnancy.

Assessing the studies, the NIH concluded that acupuncture may also help control the pain of menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, low back pain, osteoarthritis, headache and other conditions that involve chronic pain.
