Unlike stimulants such as caffeine or relaxants such as valerian root, adaptogens are not a quick, emergency fix; rather, taken as a daily “tonic,” these gentle herbs gradually increase the body’s ability to withstand stress, thereby boosting energy and immunity and improving general well-being. Adaptogens include Ashwagandha, Eleuthero, Asian ginseng, Reishi mushrooms, Rhodiola, and Schizandra.
