Organic foods are grown on farms that do not use chemicals on the soil, on the plants or on the harvested products. Why do I [Dr. William Crook] recommend such foods? I’m deeply concerned about the pesticides. Pesticides make millions of people sick.
Elson M. Haas, M.D., author of The Staying Healthy Shopper’s Guide, lists eight ways of “minimizing pesticides in your food.” Here are several of them:
-Limit use of out-of-season imported produce
-Wash, soak and peel conventionally grown fruits and vegetables
-Limit your intake of red meats and factory-farmed poultry
-Limit your intake of fish known to be caught from polluted waters
-Try emphasizing fruits and vegetables that can be peeled or those tha have been found to have low residues.
