We hear a lot about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and often the person suffering is a veteran. In this video, though, Dani Bostick points out that PTSD affects people from all walks of life and can be a real and present danger for children.

Like fibromyalgia, trauma pervades every aspect of your life; in fact, some researchers believe childhood trauma may be a trigger for fibromyalgia.

Dani’s suggestions for helping children with PTSD can be helpful for those of us with fibromyalgia:

  • Information
    • Dani suggests finding and sharing information about childhood trauma; the same is true for FM. The more we know, the better equipped we are to live with our illness.
  • Share stories
    • Sharing our stories – whether through commenting on a ProHealth article or participating in a support group – helps us know that we’re not alone.
  • Be an ally
    • Dani shows a picture of her 7th grade teacher who was an ally for her when she was an 11-year old student AND when she was present at the sentencing hearing for Dani’s perpetrator.  Having an ally is especially important when you live with fibromyalgia – someone who can be there for you in the good and the bad, someone who believes you and understands as much as possible what you’re living with.

Sometimes even to live is an act of courage.
