NADH-CoQ10-85126

Do you feel exhausted, despite how amazing your night of sleep was? Do you feel like you can’t focus, no matter how hard you try? Are you continually forgetting what your friend told you a week ago? If so, you may have low NADH and CoQ10 levels. These are essential nutrients and antioxidants that facilitate the production of cellular energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) – and play a role in thousands of chemical reactions that occur in the body. As we age, or when we have chronic illnesses, these levels lower and issues begin to occur.

NADH and CoQ10 both support cellular energy production. Coenzyme Q10 is involved in cellular energy production; however, at a much lower level than NADH. Coenzyme Q10 needs NADH to be transformed into its reduced form. Only in its reduced form is CoQ10 active and can transport electrons from NADH to oxygen, which then leads to energy production in the form of ATP.

NADH, however, has many more functions in the body in addition to producing energy. It repairs cell and DNA damage; it stimulates the immune system; it stimulates the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitters adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin; it stimulates the production of NO (Nitric Oxide), which induces relaxation of blood vessels in many organs such as the heart, lungs, brain, and kidneys.

NADH, CoQ10 and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Research

Researchers in Spain “conducted an 8-week, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the benefits of oral CoQ10 (200 mg/day) plus NADH (20 mg/day) supplementation on fatigue and biochemical parameters in 73 Spanish CFS [chronic fatigue syndrome] patients. This study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov.” In this study, the researchers found that the combination of both CoQ10 and NADH “induced a significant reduction of fatigue, decrease in oxidative damage, improvement of mitochondrial function, and enhancement of energy, showing a potential role in the physiopathology of the condition.” (1)

The same researchers conducted a subsequent study using the same levels of NADH and COQ10 to determine the effects of the nutrients on CFS patient’s maximum heart rate after exercise.  The results of the study showed that supplementation with NADH and CoQ10 significantly reduced the max heart rate during exercise and participants reported a reduced the perception of fatigue.

After completing these two studies, researchers believe that the combination of the two nutrients could reduce symptoms of CFS and other chronic fatiguing illnesses. This is because they are both bioenergetics cofactors that have the potential to enhance mitochondrial function. They are also free radical scavengers that have powerful antioxidant properties. (1) In both studies the combination of these nutrients where deemed safe and well tolerated by patients.

There have been several other studies on NADH and CoQ10 that proposed symptomatic treatment for CFS patients. One in particular was “a proof-of-concept, 8-week, randomized, controlled, double-blind trial [that] was conducted in 80 CFS patients assigned to receive either CoQ10 plus NADH supplementation or matching placebo twice daily.” (3)  The results of this study were that the supplementation of CoQ10 and NADH for 8 weeks can potentially be effective in reducing CFS patient’s max heart rate and fatigue. The results showed that it was safe and that patients benefited from taking both CoQ10 and NADH at the same time. CFS does not have one cause or treatment, and there are no established diagnostic tests for it, but these findings are showing that there are some nutrients that can reduce fatigue and heart rate for CFS patients. NADH + CoQ10’s Innovated Capsules

One of the big challenges with NADH and CoQ10 is making them bioavailable when taken orally.  ProHealth’s NADH + CoQ10 utilizes a patented delayed-release capsule to protect the delicate co-enzymes from stomach acid. These innovative capsules are designed to release their contents in the small intestine, where it can be most readily absorbed by the body. The capsules are acid-resistant, plant-based and formulated for enhance stability. They have no chemicals, solvents or coating polymers.

NADH

What is it?

NADH is the fuel our cells need to produce energy and function properly. It is a reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and is a naturally occurring coenzyme formed from Niacin (vitamin B3) that plays an essential role in the energy production of every human cell – all 100 trillion of them.

What does it do?

It is known to improve cellular energy safely by increasing production of the cellular fuel ATP. NADH also plays a vital role in creation of the neurotransmitters (brain chemicals) serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine – important for mood, memory, alertness, and concentration.

Studies suggest NADH may help:

  • Increase energy and reduce fatigue.
  • Support the immune system with powerful antioxidants and free-radical scavengers.
  • Improve memory, focus and mental clarity.
  • Enhance mood and emotional balance.
  • Help with jet lag

NADH is a critical component of your body’s ability to function. Without NADH, your cells’   mitochondria (complex, interconnected structures within human cells that are responsible for producing the chemical energy we need to survive) cannot produce energy and the cells will die.

Researchers have noted:

Fatigue is a key symptom of ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and Lyme disease. Since recurring fatigue is marked by low cellular ATP, which results in low cellular energy production, researchers have studied the use of NADH to increase energy. In these studies, results showed that those taking NADH had a favorable response.

Another major complaint of ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and Lyme disease patients is cognitive functioning problems, such as memory loss, difficulty concentrating and mental fogginess. Adrenaline and dopamine are essential substances for our cognitive performance and memory. Levels of these substances lower with energy deficiency and can cause lack of concentration and alertness, sometimes known “mental fog.” NADH stimulates the production of adrenaline and dopamine and can improve mental clarity.

NADH holds great promise for those seeking support for their energy needs, including individuals with ME/CFS, fibromyalgia. When effectively delivered to the cells, research indicates NADH may enhance energy naturally, improve cellular energy, elevate mental clarity, and improve alertness and concentration optimally.

CoQ10

What is it?

CoQ10 is the catalyst that makes it possible for the mitochondria to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the molecule upon which all cellular functions in the body depend. In fact, 95% of all cellular energy production depends on CoQ10.

What does it do?

CoQ10 plays an important role in generating cellular energy. It is an electron/proton carrier that helps the mitochondria to produce ATP, the body’s energy source. This is vitally important because mitochondria must continually generate ATP to support every cell in the body. CoQ10 is found in high amounts in the cells of the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas. Oral supplementation with CoQ10 helps maintain CoQ10 stores in these crucial cells and tissues.

Taking CoQ10 has been seen to help health conditions and chronic diseases because it protects mitochondria membranes. (2)

Researches have noted:

People with FM and/or ME/CFS generally have very low levels of CoQ10. As we therefore might expect, many of the symptoms of a CoQ10 deficiency are remarkably similar to symptoms of FM and ME/CFS, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Pain
  • Headaches
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Generalized weakness
  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Depression
  • Vision problems
  • Seizures
  • Heart failure

Because CoQ10 is essential to every cell in the body, a severe CoQ10 deficiency can cause mitochondrial dysfunction, which in turn has a serious negative impact on multiple organs and body systems.
