Researchers in Spain “conducted an 8-week, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the benefits of oral CoQ10 (200 mg/day) plus NADH (20 mg/day) supplementation on fatigue and biochemical parameters in 73 Spanish CFS [chronic fatigue syndrome] patients. This study was registered in ClinicalTrials.gov.” In this study, the researchers found that the combination of both CoQ10 and NADH “induced a significant reduction of fatigue, decrease in oxidative damage, improvement of mitochondrial function, and enhancement of energy, showing a potential role in the physiopathology of the condition.” (1)
The same researchers conducted a subsequent study using the same levels of NADH and COQ10 to determine the effects of the nutrients on CFS patient’s maximum heart rate after exercise. The results of the study showed that supplementation with NADH and CoQ10 significantly reduced the max heart rate during exercise and participants reported a reduced the perception of fatigue.
After completing these two studies, researchers believe that the combination of the two nutrients could reduce symptoms of CFS and other chronic fatiguing illnesses. One in particular was “a proof-of-concept, 8-week, randomized, controlled, double-blind trial [that] was conducted in 80 CFS patients assigned to receive either CoQ10 plus NADH supplementation or matching placebo twice daily.” (3) The results of this study were that the supplementation of CoQ10 and NADH for 8 weeks can potentially be effective in reducing CFS patient’s max heart rate and fatigue. The results showed that it was safe and that patients benefited from taking both CoQ10 and NADH at the same time. CFS does not have one cause or treatment, and there are no established diagnostic tests for it, but these findings are showing that there are some nutrients that can reduce fatigue and heart rate for CFS patients.
