Frequently Asked Questions
What is the percent of purity of L-5-methylfolate in this product? Methylfolate, as Quatrefolic, is 99% pure 6S isomer. How much is usually taken? We recommend taking eight (8) capsules daily: 3 capsules with breakfast, 3 capsules with lunch, and an additional 2 capsules around mid-afternoon, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner. Why is the serving size so large? The serving size for the Optimal Prenatal capsules is so large because it is impossible to provide all the necessary nutrition for the mother and all the benefits to the baby's development in fewer capsules. We recognize that some individuals may not want to take this many capsules each day, and that is why we also offer our Optimal Prenatal Protein Powder - an easy way to deliver the same complete prenatal support in a tasty chocolate or vanilla smoothie. What are your suggestions on what prenatal to take and other supplements to take while pregnant? View Dr. Lynch's article on Prenatal Supplementation: Optimizing your Future Child I have read that Red Raspberry Leaf can cause miscarriages. Why is this ingredient used in the Optimal Prenatal formula? Red raspberry leaf has been used for centuries as a traditional tonic to support healthy pregnancies. Recent studies using non-human test subjects or isolated compounds have led to some concerns about the safety of this herb - but numerous studies support the benefits and safety of red raspberry leaf as part of a supportive prenatal regimen. Read more about red raspberry leaf and pregnancy here. Is this product suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians? This product is suitable for vegetarians, but not for vegans. Does this product contain any grain or grain-derived ingredients? Yes, this product contains maltodextrin, an ingredient derived from corn, corn starch and corn-derived ascorbic acid. This product is gluten-free. Does this product contain GMO ingredients? No, this product does not contain GMOs. Is this product free of Magnesium Stearate? Yes. This product does not contain Magnesium Stearate. Is it OK to store the capsules in a vitamin organizer? It is best not to put this product in a vitamin organizer as some of the ingredients are susceptible to moisture. The capsules should remain in the bottle where they will be more protected from environmental influences. Where is this formula manufactured? This product is manufactured in the United States. This product was made in a GMP and ISO 9001:2008 registered facility. I was told that DHA is important for prenatal nutrition. Why is DHA not included in the Optimal Prenatal formula? DHA is extremely important for prenatal nutrition and early brain development. We do not include DHA in this formula because DHA is more stable and effective in liquid or softgel form. It is also needed in high quantities that could not feasibly fit into the formula without increasing the serving size further. Dr. Lynch also recognizes that vitamin D3, probiotics, and iron are all very important during pregnancy. He recommends that these are taken as well, but on an as-needed basis. Leaving these nutrients out of the formula, or including them only in small amounts, allows flexibility for customizing your prenatal regimen. For more information and suggestions, please see Dr. Lynch’s article, “Prenatal Supplementation: Optimizing Your Future Child.” I am concerned about the Vitamin K included in this product and its blood-thinning properties. Is Vitamin K safe to take during pregnancy? Vitamin K is needed during pregnancy. The amount of Vitamin K used in the Optimal Prenatal formula is consistent with the requirements for intake during pregnancy. If you are taking blood thinning medications, Dr. Lynch recommends having your doctor adjust your dose of these medications during pregnancy so that you can take a prenatal vitamin containing Vitamin K and a fish oil supplement. Simply have your doctor continue to test and monitor your blood after beginning the Optimal Prenatal.
