Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt Construction

Cuddle Ewe UnderquiltA Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilt begins as millions of pure, cleaned wool fibers obtained from a breed of sheep found in Britain that grows the worlds most resilient wool. Minimal processing, including washing with a mild soap and water solution and bleaching with hydrogen peroxide, leaves the wool close to it's natural state when first sheared preserving its phenomenal weight carrying buoyancy.

In the photo above, you see it in layered batts nearly ten inches thick before it is sewn within a breathable woven cotton cover and thread tufted to a finished thickness of about three to four inches. The self-binding, intertwined wool fibers eliminate any possibility of voids.

Tufting of the wool ensures it will not shift inside the cotton cover and is done with strong nylon thread without buttons that might otherwise irritate you while lying on your Underquilt.

Cuddle Ewe™ Underquilts are lock stitched with about thirteen stitches per inch. Seams are closely lock stitched (about 13 stitches per inch - that will not unravel). So all the wool inside is there to stay -- uniform, breathable, and ready to give you many years of supreme comfort!

Each underquilt is unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for 5 years from the time of delivery

All Cuddle Ewe™ underquilts are conveniently shipped directly from the manufacturer via UPS. The shipping cost of $35 is included in the price of the underquilt.

*$41 value includes a $10 shipping charge.

What is an underquilt?
Cuddle Ewe underquilts are bedding accessories that transform your bed from something routine into something sublime. Placed between your mattress and bottom sheet, Cuddle Ewe underquilts support and distribute your body weight and manage temperature and moisture like no other product, natural or synthetic. You will marvel at how wonderful your bed feels, when you nestle into the gentle embrace of a Cuddle Ewe underquilt filled with layer upon layer of thick, natural wool batting. This enables you to wake up each morning with renewed physical and mental energy.

Why are the underquilts made of wool?
Battened wool is a resilient, natural, weight supporting fiber with springy crimps that create substantial weight support. Almost four pounds of pure wool per square yard goes into each underquilt, which is easily 40% more than the amount used in the heaviest ‘luxury’ wool mattress pad you’ll find in stores or catalogs.

Only wool has the dynamic ability to support and distribute body weight away from pressure points and tender points, which comforts joints and soothes aching muscles, better than any other material. Wool is also the most resistant of all natural fibers and can be stretched to 140% of their original length, and can even be stretched 20,000 times before they break.

What kind of wool is used?
Cuddle Ewe™ underquilts are filled with cheviot wool, the most resilient and one of the softest varieties of wool found to date. This type of wool is primarily found in one place in the world, and that is in the Cheviot Hills which separate Scotland from England. Cheviot wool is the product of sheep raised in this unique climate and on vegetation found only in this part of the world.

To demonstrate the improved thickness and resilience of Cheviot wool, Cuddle Ewe™ underquilts were tested for thickness loss against underquilts made with New Zealand wool; using an industry standard bedding product life cycle test. After ten (10) years of simulated use, Cheviot wool filled Cuddle Ewe™ underquilts had lost only 12% of their thickness, while the New Zealand units had lost more than 15% of their thickness. The same test also indicated that the Cheviot wool filled Cuddle Ewe™ underquilts were 13% softer than the New Zealand wool filled underquilts at the end of ten (10) years of simulated use.

How is the wool processed?
To clean the wool from its original greasy form, the wool is first scoured (degreased) and sent through a vigorous washing process that consists of soap and water that is maintained at a neutral Ph7 with alkali to control the amino acids produced by the soap. A color enhancing solution of hydrogen peroxide is then applied to the wool in the final rinsing bowl.

A shrink-proofing process follows scouring which requires a strong oxidizing agent (Ch2), a reducing agent then neutralizes the oxidation and a cationic softening agent is followed by rinsing in lots of fresh water.

The wool is then shipped to the manufacturer by boat and then run through a garneting machine to make the batts of wool that are in each Cuddle Ewe.

Will the wool make me feel hot at night?
Natural wool breathes and allows you to regulate temperature and moisture, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer for a very comfortable night’s sleep. The fibers of sheep’s wool are filled with countless air spaces. This captured air acts as a buffer to changes in temperature. Wool also absorbs moisture and lets it evaporate into the air without feeling wet to the skin. As that wool absorbs your water vapor, air circulating through it continually disperses the moisture by evaporation. So in hot weather, your skin and sheets remain dry, you stay cooler, and sleep more soundly.

Will the underquilt flatten out over time?
It's normal for a Cuddle Ewe underquilt to lose some of its thickness over time, and this thickness loss is predictable. Standard industry product life tests indicate that a new 3.0 in. thick quilt will compact to 2.6 in. after 3 months, and will compact to 2.3 in. after one year. This is still much thicker than competing mattress pads that only measure 0.75 to 1.25 in thickness when new. It is also important to note that a loss in thickness does not mean a loss in comfort. Thickness or compaction indicates where your body lies consistently at rest. Compaction then, is an indicator of comfortable, sound, non-restless sleep.

How do I use the underquilt?
Remove all bedding from your bed and place the underquilt directly onto the mattress. Notice the size. All sizes of Cuddle Ewe underquilts are manufactured so that their relaxed state dimensions are within one (1) inch (on all sides) of the mattress surface. This allows you to cover your new underquilt and your mattress with a normal sized bottom sheet. At first, it may look somewhat thick and undersized but it will soon settle down to its normal loft of somewhere between 2 and 3 inches.

Place a light-weight, washable cotton flannelette directly on top of the underquilt for soiling protection. Do not use mattress covers made with foam or other synthetic fibers, as this will oppose the natural cushioning and air movement in the wool. Place your bottom sheet on next, and proceed with sheet and blanket layers as normal.

To promote even settling of your underquilt, try to lie over as wide an area as possible during the first few weeks of use. It's also good practice to turn the underquilt over and/or from end-to-end each time you change your sheets.

How do I care for the underquilt? Can I wash it?
You can remove the underquilt from your mattress occasionally to vacuum clean it, then hang it outdoors naturally. Loops sewn into the ticking are provided for this purpose. The underquilt can also be taken to a laundromat and placed into a dryer on an air dry (NO HEAT!!) setting for 10 - 15 minutes to help fluff them

Do not machine wash or dry clean this product. The wringing and agitation in both of these processes makes the wool clumpy and when it dries it will become hard. Washing deteriorates the resiliency and loft of the specially processed wool inside the underquilt.

Should it become soiled, gently sponge the underquilt with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then allow to air dry. Some spots can be flushed with water as long as the water is not wrung or squeezed out.

Is there a warranty for the underquilt?
Each underquilt is unconditionally guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship for 5 years from the time of delivery
